Former CIA Director John Brennan helped spark the investigation last summer into possible ties between Donald Trump's associates and Russia, The Washington Times reported.

Brennan is described as a close confident of former President Barack Obama. Aside from serving as CIA director, Brennan worked on Obama's 2008 presidential campaign, according to the newspaper.

And he has never hidden his dislike for Trump, the Times added.

Brennan has told the House Intelligence Committee he had seen bits of information during the campaign that Trump associates were making contact with Russian officials, the newspaper reported. He did not name any of those involved.

But he was convinced the contacts were sufficient enough to alert the FBI, the Times noted.

"I wanted to make sure that every information and bit of intelligence that we had was shared with the bureau (FBI) so that they could take it," he said. "It was well beyond my mandate as director of CIA to follow on any of those leads that involved U.S. persons. But I made sure that anything that was involving U.S. persons, including anything involving the individuals involved in the Trump campaign, was shared with the bureau."

And he added: "I was aware of intelligence and information about contacts between Russian officials and U.S. persons that raised concerns in my mind about whether or not those individuals were cooperating with the Russians, either in a witting or unwitting fashion, and it served as the basis for the FBI investigation to determine whether such collusion (or) cooperation occurred."

But Brennan stopped short of claiming there was any collusion between the Trump campaign and the Russians, CNN reported.

"I saw interaction that in my mind raised questions of whether it was collusion," he said.
