Joe Scarborough: With Sanford Loss, GOP is Now a 'Trumpist Cult'

Rep. Mark Sanford’s stunning loss in the South Carolina primary – just hours after President Donald Trump took to Twitter to stick a dagger through his candidacy – proves the Republican Party has turned into a “Trumpist cult," Joe Scarborough said Wednesday morning.

"Why don’t we just say [the GOP] has devolved into a cult? Primary voters in the Republican Party have devolved into a Trumpist cult,” said Scarborough, the co-host of MSNBC’s "Morning Joe" and a former Republican congressman in Florida.

Hours before the polls closed Tuesday night, Trump issued a last-second tweet in support of Rep. Katie Arrington over incumbent Sanford, a staunch conservative who’d been critical of the commander in chief, once saying he "fanned the flames of intolerance" and calling on him to release his tax returns.

"Mark Sanford has been very unhelpful to me in my campaign to MAGA. He is MIA and nothing but trouble. He is better off in Argentina. I fully endorse Katie Arrington for Congress in SC, a state I love. She is tough on crime and will continue our fight to lower taxes. VOTE Katie!” the president said.

The endorsement helped Arrington, who had made a campaign issue of Sanford’s criticism of Trump, take 50.6 percent of the vote to Sanford's 46.5 percent with almost all of the ballots counted.

Trump promptly seized his eleventh-hour endorsement as a victory for his administration.

"My political representatives didn’t want me to get involved in the Mark Sanford primary thinking that Sanford would easily win - but with a few hours left I felt that Katie was such a good candidate, and Sanford was so bad, I had to give it a shot. Congrats to Katie Arrington!" Trump said on Twitter.

Scarborough said he is not sure what step staunch conservatives will take in the aftermath of Trump’s interference.

"We’ve said it before, but let us say it again, using this as an exclamation point, the Republican Party is not a conservative party. It’s not conservative intellectually, it’s not conservative fiscally, its not conservative temprementally,” Scarborough said.

"You could go back from Edmund Burke to Russell Kirk, you can go from William F, Buckley straight into Ronald Reagan -- what’s happening today is an aberration of all of those things. And that’s fine, but I wonder where conservatives go now?"

His co-host Mika Brzezinski commented: "They’re too frightened to actually express themselves."

Sanford’s loss is the latest dip in his rollercoaster-like political career. The governor of South Carolina from 2003 to 2011, Sanford’s legacy was tarnished when he vanished from sight for more than four days, later revealing he’d been having a secret affair with an Argentinian woman.

That led to his censure by the South Carolina General Assembly and his resignation as chairman of the Republican Governors Association. But Sanford rebounded to become a U.S. congressman in 2013, a post he’d previously he held from 1995 to 2001.
