President Donald Trump's background as a businessman means he'll make sure "we're getting the best bang for our buck," but he also needs to make sure that he's getting honest information to succeed with his goals, Sen. Joe Manchin said Tuesday.
"I'm a businessman also, but also being in public service and being a former governor, [I'm] knowing the decisions he has to make," said the West Virginia Democrat on Fox News' "Fox & Friends" program.
"I'm a Democrat, and I want him to succeed. He's my president. I want him to do well, but I think I have to be an honest broker and say Mr. President, you have to be careful what they're telling you here."
There are many people depending on cuts coming from contingency spending, Manchin continued, after Trump said earlier on the program that there are many people the president does not want to hire in the government.
He believes Trump will have the support of Americans if he shows the redundancy in the government, and not cut back on services people depend on.
Manchin said he and Trump have a great relationship, and are able to talk frankly. Further, the senator said he's already met with the new president more than he'd met with former President Barack Obama over the past six years.
