Democratic Nonprofit Invests Almost Half-Million to Support Manchin

Democratic donors are supporting Sen. Joe Manchin, D-W.V., with nearly the political nonprofit Duty and Honor investing nearly $500,000 in support of the senator in a state that is supportive of President Donald Trump, the Washington Examiner reported.

The senator is also getting help from the super PAC Duty and Country, with that group reporting $80,000 in funding for digital advertising, with half supporting Manchin and the other half aiming at his Republican opponent, West Virginia Attorney General Patrick Morrissey, the report said.

Republicans are targeting Manchin with Morrisey, a popular political figure in West Virginia, where Trump won the state by 42 percentage points in the 2016 election, the report said.

A Duty and Honor ad for Manchin said he supported Trump’s border wall. "Joe Manchin was one of three Democrats to vote with President Trump to fund the wall… the fact is, Joe is one of us," the voiceover in the ad said, the Examiner reported.

Morrisey’s campaign took aim at Manchin after he signed onto a Sen. Dianne Feinstein, D-Calif., bill to halt the family separations policy. "Joe Manchin is clearly deceiving West Virginia voters about his radical open-borders record, and his support for the (Barack) Obama-era catch-and-release policies in the Manchin-Feinstein border bill," Morrisey spokesman Nathan Brand said, the Examiner reported.

Trump targeted Manchin in May, telling Republican senators behind closed doors that he would spend time campaigning against the senator. Trump said the senator only appears to be willing to work with him, saying Manchin “hugs and kisses me and then votes the other way."
