Sen. Joe Donnelly, D-Ind., told WNDU he will sit down with President Donald Trump's Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh and review the judge's rulings and writing in legal publications before making a decision on his confirmation.

Donnelly is up for re-election this November in a state where Trump won by 19 percent, and the White House is applying pressure to red state Democrats such as him.

"If they're doing right by their voters, and not by the leadership, who is trying to tug them all the way to the left, then they will do the right thing," White House counselor to the president Kellyanne Conway said. "But that's up to each of them, and we'll all be watching."

Donnelly was one of three Democrats who voted for Trump's first Supreme Court pick, Justice Neil Gorsuch.

Donnelly said "When I spoke with Justice Gorsuch, when I reviewed his writings, when I reviewed his court decisions, I became comfortable he wasn't extreme one way or the other."

This time around Indiana University Prof. Marjorie Hershey told the South Bend Tribune it is not safe to assume Donnelly will vote for Trump's pick.

"It's a difficult calculation for a moderate Democrat to make in these polarized times: whether to vote for the president's nominee and risk losing the votes of liberal Democrats, or to oppose the nominee and risk alienating possible Republican crossover voters," Hershey said.

Tim Swarens stressed in the Indianapolis Star that Donnelly would indeed face a strong backlash from moderate GOP supporters considering voting for him if he opposes a well-qualified conservative nominee for the Supreme Court just weeks before the election.

When asked if he is comfortable with people watching his decision, Donnelly insisted to WNDU he does not feel pressure regarding the decision, stressing "I work for the people of Indiana, and I want them to have a voice in this."
