President Joe Biden's reelection campaign is in serious trouble, political strategist Karl Rove wrote in the Wall Street Journal.
Biden trails Trump in five of six battleground states, according to polls released Monday, and is on track to win at least 283 electoral votes, Rove said. Trump leads Biden in states Biden won in 2020 like Arizona, Nevada, and Georgia.
"The president has no chance of winning them or any other battleground until he confronts his serious problems," Rove wrote. "He's behind in the polls not because his predecessor is outperforming his 2020 numbers but because the president is way underperforming his, especially among black, Hispanic and young voters."
Rove wondered if Biden is putting on a brave face or simply in denial whenever he waves off his poor poll numbers. Rove pointed out that strategists like James Carville and David Axelrod, who helped Bill Clinton and Barack Obama become president, respectively, have criticized Biden's campaign.
"Hyping his accomplishments hasn't lifted Mr. Biden in the polls," Rove said. "Nor has emphasizing Mr. Trump's threat to abortion rights or democracy."
Biden needs to figure out how to take down Trump with undecided voters, especially those who don't like either candidate.
"The president is running out of time to convince these voters that Donald Trump is worse than he is," Rove said. "Other incumbents were successfully attacking their challengers long before this point in their reelection race."
Rove said Biden could be boosted by the financial advantage his campaign has over Trump's. Rove also criticized Trump for talking too much about his legal troubles.
"By failing to realize this election is about America's future and not his present, Mr. Trump is providing Mr. Biden an opening," Rove said. "We'll see if the president takes advantage of it."
