President Joe Biden has launched a new ad campaign blaming restrictive state bans on abortion on former President Donald Trump.
The ads, which will cost the Biden campaign seven figures, will run on the two-year anniversary of the leak of a Supreme Court draft opinion on the case that overturned Roe v. Wade, allowing states to set their own abortion rules, according to CBS News.
The 60-second ad, "Prosecute," features a Texas woman, Austin Dennard, saying the state's near-total abortion ban forced her to leave the state when she learned her fetus had a fatal condition and would not survive.
"If Donald Trump is elected, that is the end of a woman's right to choose. There will be no place to turn. We could lose our rights in every state, even the ones where abortion is currently legal," said Dennard. "That means every woman in every state is at risk."
Karoline Leavitt, a spokeswoman for the Trump campaign, said Trump supports the rights of states to make decisions on abortion. This echoed what Trump said in a recent interview, where he said he opposed a national ban on abortion.
Trump also opposed an Arizona Supreme Court ruling that restored a law passed in 1864 banning almost all abortions, saying it went too far. The law has since been repealed, with Arizona banning abortion after 15 weeks.
"It is now up to the States and the goodwill of those that represent the people," Trump wrote on Truth Social. "We must ideally have the three exceptions for rape, incest, and life of the mother."
Trump has admonished Republicans to focus on winning elections in order to deradicalize Democrats on killing babies, he said in his Michigan rally Wednesday night on Newsmax.
At the rally, Trump, who maintains he is the most pro-life president in American history, repeated his belief that winning elections means you have to accept some exceptions and time for mothers to decide on their pregnancy — a fact that has irked some of his pro-life backers.
In Biden's ad, he calls attention to a recent comment Trump made to Time Magazine when he said it is up to states to decide whether to prosecute women who receive abortions. Trump also said he would allow states to monitor women's pregnancies to determine if they had an abortion.
The campaign ad will run in seven battleground states on various networks and during the Kentucky Derby on Saturday, CBS News said.
According to AdImpact, Biden's campaign has aired six different TV ads related to abortion, CBS News reports.
