Vice President Joe Biden says he will not continue in the administration even if Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton makes it to the White House this November. Instead, he plans to dedicate the rest of his career working on cancer research projects.

"I'm not going to stay on in the administration," Biden told the Stat in an exclusive interview. "What Hillary talked about is, as I understood it, me being able to have the same authority over elements of her administration from the outside that I have now from the inside, to be able to coordinate those efforts."

Biden said he will work towards exploring ways to accelerate cancer research after he and President Barack Obama leave office. The vice president has been aiming to achieve 10 years' worth of progress in five years, The Hill reports.

Biden's commitment towards the cause comes after his son Beau died of brain cancer last year.

He also said that he would continue with the initiative even if Republican nominee Donald Trump came to power.

"I would hope [Trump] would bring, attract, out of just pure patriotic necessity, some very good minds to let him know that there is a lot of money we're spending in the federal government, billions of dollars on medical research," Biden said. "And there is a consensus."

Biden revealed he has had discussions with scientists, foundations, and other institutions regarding his mission. He also claimed to have had a conversation recently with "a billionaire philanthropist" regarding "existing philanthropic efforts relating to cancer."

Improving communication among researchers has been one of Biden's major goals, apart from a series of other initiatives to fight cancer.

"I'm going to stay involved in this effort as long as I'm alive," Biden told Stat. "So I'm going to stay engaged. Exactly how, I don't know yet."
