The ongoing House impeachment inquiry shows the "politicization of Congress" that is causing widespread "disarray and dysfunction" in the government, Rep. Jodey Arrington, R-Texas, told Newsmax TV on Monday.
"We have to engage in this," Arrington told "The Chris Salcedo Show," "because we cannot let them control the narrative and make the American people somehow believe that there's any legitimacy to this. The fact is, it's not only illegitimate and not credible in all kinds of levels that we could go into, and that it's purely political in nature, and a break from past precedent."
He added, "worst of all, it's the weaponization of the impeachment, and the weaponization of Congress' oversight in such a way that if we just sat idly by we would see irreparable harm, potentially, and it's unfortunate. I think the American people on all sides of the political spectrum see it was gridlock and the politics of personal destruction, and now it's the politics of weaponization of our oversight responsibility and impeachment."
Arrington continued, "And you get to a point where it's not just dysfunctional, it doesn't produce the results of often bipartisan problem-solving like we're trying to do with drug pricing" and "trade deals to make them more valuable.
"But now you've got this politization of Congress to the extent that you can leave a presidency, not just our president, and not just Republicans but our republic, in disarray and dysfunction that we cannot govern, we cannot functionally govern for the American people. No matter which side you sit on . . . this is bad for America."
