Relief aid for Hurricane Harvey should be a clean bill, Texas Democratic Rep. Joaquin Castro told MSNBC on Wednesday, as reported by The Washington Times.

"As I said before, I hope that there are no legislative games that are played here," Castro said. "That relief aid for Texas isn't tied to anything else that forces either Republicans or Democrats to choose between the one thing that they really want and the one thing they really hate. We ought to be able to offer relief for the people of Texas without any games."

Republicans have pushed for a clean funding bill following the devastation of the hurricane, but some fiscal hawks have also said they want the money allocated specifically instead of giving a "blank check."

Castro insisted that both parties are working in a bipartisan way to provide the initial step in what is expected to be a massive recovery effort, which he estimated will cost more than $100 billion.

The Texas representative also referred to disputes over funding to rebuild after previous hurricanes, such as Sandy, when some charged that most of the aid went to non-emergency items, CBS reported.

"I hope Congress learned its lesson from that divisive debate that we should put politics aside and support Americans when they're in dire time of need," Castro said.
