Jordan: Trump 'Didn't Have Many Choices' on Debt Ceiling

President Donald Trump's deal with Democrats to lift the debt ceiling until December wasn't a great plan for taxpayers, House Freedom Caucus founder Rep. Jim Jordan said Friday, but then again, the president didn't have many choices.

"Any time Nancy Pelosi likes something, it's probably not the best deal for the American taxpayers," the Ohio Republican told Fox News' "Fox & Friends" program.

"Let's be clear here. He didn't have many choices. I learned a long time ago lack of preparation typically leads to poor results. When you don't prepare and you have — you are left with poor choices, poor options. The president had to do something."

The biggest problem was that lawmakers didn't stay in Washington in August to hammer out a debt ceiling plan that addressed the underlying $20 trillion debt burden the nation faces, said Jordan.

"We took the longest August recess break in a non-election year, the longest break we have taken in over a decade," said Jordan. That's why the House Freedom Caucus called for, back in July, we said stay in August. Let's figure out the debt ceiling. Let's put together a tax reform plan and figure out Obamacare. Instead we went home almost six weeks."

There were bills passed in 2017, said Jordan, but there was a great deal of important things that did not get finished, and Americans were disappointed.

"What does the American people want us to do?" said Jordan. "Build a border wall, cut their taxes, and fix Obamacare.

Former White House chief strategist Steve Bannon told CBS News this week that the Republican establishment is trying to "nullify the 2016 election," and Jordan agreed there are many people in Washington who are not on board with what Americans elected Trump and a Republican Congress to do.

"We have got to overcome that and it starts by actually making some decisions, taking the time to prepare and put together good public policy and then go after the debate, then go have the debate with the American people," said Jordan. "If we had an option out there, we think you should cap spending and take the debt ceiling and raise the debt ceiling, but cut spending. Don't let government ever grow and grow and grow."

Further, lawmakers should put together a plan to offer the president to present to the American public, rather than take just taking what Pelosi and Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer has offered, said Jordan.

Meanwhile, when asked if he would like to see House Speaker Paul Ryan replaced, Jordan said he just wants Republicans to do what they promised the American people they would do.

"We make the job way too complicated," said Jordan. "What did the American people elect us to do? Let's do that despite what the establishment wants us to do and the obstacles we face."
