Democrats' positions on border wall funding are "entirely inconsistent" because they are more focused on stopping President Donald Trump than they are helping the United States, Rep. Jim Jordan said Thursday.
"If they could get past this idea of stopping the president and getting on with what the president talked about the other night, helping the country, we could get there, and it does include a border security wall," the Ohio Republican, a member of the House Freedom Caucus, told Fox News' "Fox and Friends." "They were for it before."
Jordan further called Democrats' refusal to call border security a national emergency "crazy."
"I mean, just last week we had a drug bust with enough fentanyl to kill 57 million Americans, and they are saying that's a regional concern, not a national emergency?" Jordan said. "Everyone knows this is a national emergency. What are we on now, the fifth caravan?"
Meanwhile, Democrats 10 years ago were for border wall construction, said Jordan, and there still may be room for a compromise now. That would reflect the persistence and willingness to negotiate Trump has displayed, he added.
Jordan said he does believe the conference committee working on the wall funding negotiations is making some progress and will keep trying to come up with an agreement before next week's deadline.
