Rep. Jim Himes, D-Conn., said Tuesday that former Trump campaign adviser Sam Nunberg's bizarre interview on CNN "distracts" and "detracts" from the serious nature of the investigation into Russian election interference.

"I don't know what to make of Nunberg, I don't think he did himself any favors," the congressman said on MSNBC's "Morning Joe," when asked about the interview from the night before.

In the interview, Nunberg swore that he would defy a grand jury subpoena, challenged special counsel Robert Mueller to arrest him, and touted conspiracy theories about the investigation into Russian election interference.

"From my perspective on one of the committees of investigation here," said Himes, who sits on the House Intelligence Committee, "and to be honest one of the committees that maybe hasn't done the investigation with the quietness and the impartiality that it should, this detracts — distracts, I should say, from the fact that Russia attacked our elections. We're not doing much about it and now we're spending 18 hours talking about some guy who may or may not have had a cocktail before he made the rounds of national television, it really detracts from something serious."

He later added that Intelligence Committee Chairman Devin Nunes, R-Calif., "single-handedly" presented his memo to the committee, saying, "I'm not sure the Republicans had much chance to look at it. And again, I'm not sure they would say it but there are some who would rather not be in that dynamic. You can talk to [Florida Republican Rep.] Tom Rooney, you can talk to [South Carolina Republican Rep.] Trey Gowdy, those are the two guys who are point on this investigation. They're both retiring."
