Dem Rep. Jim Himes: Time for Comey to Say Trump Is 'Plain Wrong' About Wiretap Claims

("Morning Joe")

It's time for FBI Director James Comey to say that President Donald Trump is "plain wrong," about his wiretap allegations, Rep. Jim Himes said Monday.

"I tend to, on issues of integrity, give him a lot of space, but it is time, and I hope it happens today, for him to come out and say this was just plain wrong," Himes, a Connecticut Democrat, told MSNBC's "Morning Joe" program.

Comey will tesitfy Monday before the House Intelligence Committee to provide more information of any investigation his agents are conducting over contacts between President Trump's associates and Russia.

When asked if Himes had seen any evidence that former President Barack Obama had wiretapped Trump Tower, he replied: "None, none at all."

"I'm only the, what, 36th or 40th voice saying that. We hope that this morning's hearings, among other things, will allow Director Comey to finally put a stake in that particular vampire's heart.

"If this is made up out of whole cloth and there's absolutely nothing there, then of course he should . . . The one thing we know about Donald Trump is he never has a regret, he never apologizes," Himes added.

"Let's imagine that there was something there. It's not a wiretap ordered by Obama on Trump Tower. Maybe it's one of Trump's people — maybe it's [Paul] Manafort or [Roger] Stone — that had some sort of investigation around them… then, too, the American people have a right to know.

"Were there connections? Was there knowledge of what the Russians were doing by any of Trump's people?" Himes asked.

"If you actually had Trump people working with the Russians, that would be a historical scandal. It could simply be knowledge. What if somebody like Roger Stone or Paul Manafort or any of the characters here who had these bizarre meetings with Russia — and most of them then dissembled about whether they had those meetings — what if they simply knew?"

However, Comey would probably not say anything in the hearings Monday about any collusion or communication, Himes said, since such an investigation would be ongoing.

The congressman also questioned Trump's behavior toward Russian President Vladimir Putin.

"Why is Trump acting the way he is? Do the Russians have anything on him? Here's a guy who will attack everybody, from the cast of ‘Hamilton' to the intelligence community to Sen. (Chuck) Schumer, but in the face of unbelievable violence or bad behavior, he puts this halo around Vladimir Putin."

Himes has introduced a bill to take some power away from Trump. On March 9, he introduced The Reclamation of War Powers Act, which would return the power to declare and wage war to Congress, as stated in the Constitution.
