Rep. Jim Himes, D-Conn., on Monday ripped Sen. Marco Rubio, R-Fla., for saying that the recent school shooting in Parkland wouldn't have been prevented by stricter gun laws.

"People like Marco Rubio and Speaker [Paul] Ryan will not allow that conversation to happen because it will cut off the flow of money from the NRA and groups like it that are funding these guys precisely to stop any meaningful change on gun safety," Himes said on CNN, according to The Washington Times.

Last week, Rubio argued during an interview with the Miami Herald that laws limiting the sale of semi-automatic rifles like the one used in the Parkland shooting wouldn't have prevented the crime.

"It is unfair to argue that there's nothing we can do other than be more careful," Rubio said. "It's also unfair to argue that the reason why people are suffering today is because there's some great law out there that if we had just passed it, it wouldn't have happened. It's not accurate. Both of those things are wrong."

Critics of Rubio were quick to point out that he's earned an A+ rating from the NRA, and accepted $3.3 million in donations from interest groups that promote gun-rights.

The congressman added that after the deadly mass shooting in his own state at Sandy Hook Elementary school, the legislature passed stricter gun laws and since then has seen a decline in deaths related to guns.

"The facts are incontrovertible here," he said. "They can't allow the conversation to go to facts."
