Former 2016 Green Party presidential candidate Jill Stein said Thursday that she welcomed a congressional investigation into her campaign's ties to Russia, saying "it's great to clear the air."

"That picture has been circulated, sort of a factless photograph, that's been used to smear our campaign for a better part of a year," Stein told Pamela Brown on CNN. "It surfaced a year after the event itself, which was back in 2015."

Stein was referring to a photograph of her seated at a 2015 dinner for the RT news outlet at the same table with Russian President Vladimir Putin and Michael Flynn, who was later fired as national security adviser by President Donald Trump over his Moscow ties.

Salon.com reported Thursday that the Senate Intelligence Committee was probing Stein's campaign over her Russian connections.

Stein said that the 2015 photograph was leaked to divert attention from the hack of the Democratic National Committee during last year's election and concerns that the committee had "rigged" the primaries against candidate Bernie Sanders.

"Once the DNC e-mails were leaked and, suddenly, there was an effort to change the topic from the collusion of the Democratic Party to eliminate Bernie Sanders, which was, essentially, a rigged primary … there was an effort to divert attention."

Stein said she never spoke with Putin — before, during or after the dinner — and she attended to discuss her vision for Middle East peace.

"It's important we have other ideas out there," she told Brown. "The same agenda that I would advance during the election, domestically, I was happy to share overseas — not only with Russian officials, but with media from all over the world.

"I didn't speak to Vladimir Putin."
