Jerry Falwell Jr., the son of the late Rev. Jerry Falwell and current president of Liberty University, says that if Rev. Billy Graham were still alive today to counsel President Trump as he did every president since Harry S. Truman he'd urge him to stay the course "and take it as a compliment when all the liberals are beating up on you and screaming bloody murder."

Falwell's comments came during an exclusive Newsmax interview Wednesday in which he told Newsmax that his late father viewed Rev. Graham as a friend and mentor.

He said his father actually traced his spiritual heritage to Rev. Graham. Graham was a mentor to radio evangelist Charles A. Fuller, who in turn led the elder Falwell to faith in Jesus Christ. Graham, the "pastor to presidents," died on Wednesday.

Trump met Graham on his 95th birthday in November 2013, well before Trump's June 2015 announcement that he would seek the GOP nomination for president.

Falwell was one of the early supporters of Trump during the campaign, and continued to defend him even when his stance sparked some student protests on his own campus.

Graham met with and counseled 12 U.S. presidents. In an exclusive interview Wednesday, Falwell told Newsmax that he believes Rev. Graham's advice to Trump today would be much the same as his son Franklin Graham's.

"If you read Franklin's tweets," says Falwell, "he's constantly talking about how Donald Trump is the first president who genuinely cares about Christians and the issues that are important to Christians, and he's constantly praising the president. A lot of other presidents have given lip service in that regard, but didn't follow through.

"I think his advice would be keep on the path you're on, and do what's right for the American people, not the elitists and not the establishment. And take it as a compliment when all the liberals are beating up on you and screaming bloody murder."

Noting that Franklin's children all attended Liberty University, and that his family has grown close to the Grahams, Falwell told Newsmax: "It's just a great loss. The whole Liberty community is in mourning today, and we're keeping the entire Graham family in our prayers."
