Republicans are divided over whether to support Attorney General Jeff Sessions, but the party's leader in the Senate expressed his confidence in him Tuesday morning.

"I have total confidence in the attorney general and I think he ought to stay exactly where he is," Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell said in an interview broadcast by CNN.

McConnell's remark came hours after Sen. Lindsey Graham, R-S.C., blasted Sessions on NBC.

"The president's lost confidence in Jeff Sessions," Graham said. "And I'm telling you what everybody in the country knows: This is a dysfunctional relationship. We need a better one. Is there somebody who's highly qualified that has the confidence of the president who'll also understand their job is to protect [special counsel Robert] Mueller? Yes, I think we can find that person after the election, if that's what the president wants."

President Donald Trump has discussed the possibility of dismissing Sessions because of the Department of Justice's Russia investigation, which is looking at whether Trump's campaign had an improper relationship with Moscow. Sessions recused himself from the probe because of the role he played during the Trump campaign.

Graham isn't alone in thinking Trump should fire Sessions. Liberty University president and Trump's religious adviser Jerry Falwell Jr. also would like to see Sessions removed from his post.

"He really is not on the president's team, never was," Falwell said.
