Sen. Jeff Flake, R-Ariz., will compare President Donald Trump's attacks on the news media to former Russian leader Josef Stalin and communism, it was reported Sunday.

NBC News obtained portions of Flake's speech, which takes a strong stance against Trump's war on the press.

"When a figure in power reflexively calls any press that doesn't suit him 'fake news,' it is that person who should be the figure of suspicion, not the press," Flake plans to say, according to the excerpt.

"Mr. President, it is a testament to the condition of our democracy that our own president uses words infamously spoken by Josef Stalin to describe his enemies."

Flake will continue, "It bears noting that so fraught with malice was the phrase 'enemy of the people,' that even [former Russian leader] Nikita Khrushchev forbade its use, telling the Soviet Communist Party that the phrase had been introduced by Stalin for the purpose of 'annihilating such individuals' who disagreed with the supreme leader.

"This alone should be a source of great shame for us in this body, especially those of us in the president's party. For they are shameful and repulsive statements."

Trump routinely bashes the media for what he calls "fake news." The latest incident involves a Wall Street Journal interview in which the paper claimed Trump said, "I probably have a very good relationship with Kim Jong Un of North Korea." The White House and Trump said the quote is wrong and that he actually said "I'd probably have."

The Journal and the White House both released separate audio recordings of that portion of the interview, which seem to indicate that Trump said "I" as opposed to "I'd."

Trump will announce his "Fake News Awards" on Jan. 17.

Flake is a vocal Trump critic and is not running for reelection this year.
