Abortion-Rights Backers Bash Jeb for Pro-life Stance

Jeb Bush and his campaign continue to emphasize that the former Florida governor is staunchly pro-life, and this reality is not sitting well with abortion-rights supporters at liberal media organizations such as MSNBC and the Huffington Post.

On Saturday, Christian evangelical attorney Jordan Sekulow, speaking at the Faith and Freedom Summit in Iowa as Bush's representative, emphasized that the prospective candidate would support cutting off taxpayer dollars for Planned Parenthood.

"We have got to defund Planned Parenthood, by the way, and Gov. Bush supports those efforts," Sekulow said.

Bush, according to MSNBC, "is one of several prominent GOP candidates to take a stand against Planned Parenthood."

The network notes that other prominent Republicans like Florida Sen. Marco Rubio and Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker have also called for cutting off money to the group, a leading advocate for abortion rights in the United States.

MSNBC's website posted a story headlined: "Bush rejects family tradition, opposes Planned Parenthood."

But (as the story itself noted), the Bush "family tradition" on abortion has been evolving over the past 65 years or so — much as it has within the Republican Party and the United States in general.

MSNBC notes that Jeb Bush's grandfather, Prescott Bush, was twice elected to the U.S. Senate from Connecticut. But the elder Bush narrowly lost his first bid for statewide office after coming under fire for his work on behalf of Planned Parenthood.

Jeb's father, President George H.W. Bush, had also been a supporter of that group. During his tenure as vice president under President Reagan, his position on the issue evolved and he became pro-life.  President George W. Bush is regarded as the best president ever by pro-lifers.

As for Jeb Bush, his pro-life credentials were vividly shown a decade ago, when he tenaciously fought to save the life of Terry Schiavo, a severely brain-damaged woman whose husband wanted to remove her from life support despite her parents' objections.

"I acted on my core belief that the most vulnerable in our society should be in the front of the line," the former Florida governor said at CPAC this year regarding the Schiavo case. "They should receive our love and protection."
