Chaffetz, Goodlatte Call For Probe Into Mishandling of Classified Info

The chairmen of the House Oversight and Judiciary committees sent a letter to Justice Department Inspector General Michael Horowitz on Wednesday night requesting an investigation into mishandling of classified information.

Oversight Committee Chairman Jason Chaffetz earlier Wednesday told Fox News' "The First 100 Days" the letter was in the works.

The letter was signed by Chaffetz and Judiciary Committee Chairman Bob Goodlatte.

Though the letter comes in the wake of the resignation of national security adviser Michael Flynn, Chaffetz said he wants the IG to look into various cases of potential mishandling of classified information.

Host Martha McCallum noted Chaffetz is known for looking into the use of a private email server by former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, the 2016 Democratic nominee for president. But Chaffetz added his committee also has asked President Donald Trump about photos posted online by diners at his Mar-a-Lago resort, which appear to show him and Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe reviewing classified documents.

"I think the standard is still the same," Chaffetz said. "You have a duty and obligation. By its very nature, if classified information gets out there, it can harm somebody. It can kill somebody. This is serious stuff."

The rules apply not only to Flynn, who resigned Monday after leaked documents showed he had conversations with Russian officials before Trump took office, but also to whomever was behind leaking those documents. Trump pointed out Wednesday the leaks were illegal.

"They just can't be handed out like candy and favors to those in the news media," Chaffetz said.

Horowitz is highly regarded by members of both parties, Chaffetz said, and that is why his office should lead the investigation. The House Oversight committee will then follow up, Chaffetz said.
