Chaffetz: Comey May Have Committed Perjury

Former FBI Director James Comey may have committed perjury if he lied about how he came to the decision not to recommend criminal charges in the Hillary Clinton email case, former House Oversight Committee Chairman Jason Chaffetz said Friday.

Chaffetz appeared on "Fox & Friends" and addressed a report that suggested Comey had come to a decision regarding the Clinton case months before it actually ended.

"There are evidently up to 17 people that had not yet been interviewed and this is a very strong allegation," Chaffetz said. "The former FBI director has a lot of explaining to do. He could have perjured himself.

"Remember, he appeared before the House Oversight Committee, the House Judiciary Committee, [and was asked] 'how is it that you interviewed Secretary Clinton on a Saturday and then like Tuesday morning they suddenly had the report out there?'

"How is it that he's already readied the conclusion if they haven't even done the interviews?"

The FBI investigated Clinton during her presidential campaign regarding her use of a private email setup while she served as secretary of state in the Obama administration. Comey ended the probe last summer by first presenting the evidence the bureau had discovered and then saying he was not recommending to the Department of Justice that charges should be brought.

President Donald Trump fired Comey in May.

Special counsel Robert Mueller is spearheading a Department of Justice investigation into claims that the Trump campaign may have colluded with Russia. He is reportedly looking at the circumstances surrounding Comey's firing as well.
