Officials at the Treasury Department have accused Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen of not appearing in the office outside of “meeting with the president or for an occasional TV interview,” according to Fox Business Network.
Staffers told Fox Business that Yellen rarely appears at the White House and does most of her work remotely, apart from some face-to-face meetings with high-ranking senators involved in passing the recent stimulus package. According to these staffers, her deputies have also done most of their work remotely while many lower-level employees at the Treasury Department are working at headquarters just next to the White House during the coronavirus pandemic.
Yellen, who is 74, is in the higher-risk category for the virus and may have been vaccinated, but the Treasury department would not confirm.
Fox notes “Some staffers inside Treasury say Yellen would normally be a key player in the negotiations. Her absence in face-to-face talks, particularly with key lawmakers needed to pass the bill, may have contributed to the drawn out nature of the negotiations that only recently received Senate approval this weekend. The bill now heads to the House this week before landing on Biden’s desk.”
An unidentified person close to Yellen, who spoke to Fox Business on the condition of anonymity, said that the secretary’s working methods did not impact negotiations over the bill, and that she had a significant role in passing the bill.
