The Republican National Committee is running point on the White House-approved campaign to undermine the credibility of James Comey ahead of his book tour, The Washington Post and CNN are reporting.
The first shot across the bow at branding the former FBI director as a liar - a website aptly titled "Lyin Comey."
Further, RNC chairwoman Ronna McDaniel showed the hand that Republicans plan to play ahead of the release of Comey's memoir "A Higher Loyalty" next week and his accompanying media tour to promote it.
"James B. Comey’s publicity tour is a self-serving attempt to make money and rehabilitate his own image," McDaniel said in a statement to the Post and CNN.
"Comey is a liar and a leaker and his misconduct led both Republicans and Democrats to call for his firing," McDaniel said. "If Comey wants the spotlight back on him, we'll make sure the American people understand why he has no one but himself to blame for his complete lack of credibility."
Comey's tome is expected to be highly critical of President Donald Trump, who fired him last year. But Republicans will be ready to counterattack.
The RNC will employ a war room to monitor Comey's TV appearances and have a rapid response team poised to rebut every assertion that's critical of the president, the Post reports.
And for starters, Republicans are using the negative things Democrats - including Hillary Clinton - have uttered about Comey for content on lyincomey.com.
