Detailed notes James Comey says he took to leave a paper trail of President Donald Trump’s alleged attempts to influence the federal investigation into Russian interference in the 2016 presidential election should be released by the former FBI chief himself, The Weekly Standard says.

"These documents may prove that President Trump obstructed justice when he asked the FBI director to back off the investigation of Michael Flynn, Trump’s short-lived National Security Adviser. Or they may prove the opposite. They may prove that Trump lied repeatedly about his campaign’s connections with Russians. Or they may not," The Standard says in an editorial published Monday.

"Whatever the reasons for the FBI’s reluctance to release the memos, Comey can release them himself. He has copies of them in his home, as he told ABC’s George Stephanopoulos in an interview that aired Sunday night ...

"Comey created these memoranda, he says, to insure himself against whatever Trump claimed about their meetings. We know what Trump has said about their meetings. Let’s see what Comey said."
