Rep. Jackie Speier, D-Calif., said Friday that Rep. John Conyers, D-Md., should step down over allegations of sexual misconduct against him.
Conyers has faced accusations after revelations that he reached a settlement with a former staff member who said she reported misconduct and then was fired.
"I have said from the beginning of the week that I believe the victims. I think when the staffer who had a settlement broke her nondisclosure agreement and went on TV to explain what happened to her, I was convinced that there was a pattern of conduct by Rep. Conyers that is really, without any fear of contradiction, is that of a predator," Speier said Friday on CNN's "New Day."
"We cannot stand by as members of Congress and say we have zero tolerance and then let someone continue to conduct himself in the manner that he has for many years with many of his staff," she said.
Speier is working with Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand, D-N.Y., on updates to Congress' sexual harassment reporting process, she said, according to The Hill.
Rep. Brenda Lawrence, D-Mich., however, said on "New Day" that she has not called on Conyers to step down. "It is our responsibility to investigate. He is still a member of Congress," she said.
