Rep. Jackie Speier Disputes Jeh Johnson on DNC, Russia

CNN's "The Lead"

Rep. Jackie Speier on Wednesday disputed former Homeland Security Secretary Jeh Johnson's contention the Democratic National Committee declined his agency's help after its computers were hacked by Russia during last year's election.

"I'm actually disputing it somewhat, because I talked to Debbie Wasserman Schultz after the hearing, and she basically said no one came to her," the California Democrat told Jake Tapper on CNN.

She was referring to the former DNC chair, who represents Florida.

"There was a lower-level staffer who was contacted — and that was the extent of it."

Johnson, who served under former President Barack Obama from December 2013 to January 2017, told the House Intelligence Committee that Homeland Security reached out to the DNC "a number of times" after the agency was hacked last year.

"I was anxious to know whether our folks were in there," Johnson said. "The response I got was FBI had spoken to them, they don't want our help.

"That was the answer I got after I asked the question a number of times over the progression of time."

When Tapper challenged Speier on her assertion about DHS, she responded: "They reached out to inform them, but in terms of the gravity of the issue, it was really never one that was elevated.

"I mean, you go to the CEO of a company, and they probably deal with the head of I.T.," she added. "This was a lower-level person."

Wasserman Schultz has not commented on Johnson's testimony.
