Fmr J6 Chair Rep. Bennie Thompson Would Accept Biden Pardon

By    |   Thursday, 12 December 2024 04:21 PM EST

Former Jan. 6 House committee chair Rep. Bennie Thompson, D-Miss., says he's open to accepting a preemptive pardon from President Joe Biden if he offered one.

"The president, it's his prerogative," Thompson told CNN's Jim Acosta on whether he wants Biden to preemptively pardon him.

"If he offers it — to me or other members of the committee — I think … I would accept it, but it's his choice."

President-elect Donald Trump as recently as this week said those who investigated the Jan. 6 U.S. Capitol riot should go to jail.

He previously promised to seek retribution against political opponents, from President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris to New York Attorney General Letitia James and special counsel Jack Smith.

Trump this week also singled out Wyoming Republican Liz Cheney, a vocal Trump critic, and Thompson, saying that they had destroyed evidence collected in their investigation and that "those people committed a major crime."

Thompson told CNN his committee "did a wonderful job; I think the witnesses who were primarily Republicans did a great job under oath. They were not found to have perjured themselves or anything like that."

"We've had two years of review by Republican chairpersons. They found nothing wrong," he said. "We stand by the work of the committee. Our committee did a wonderful job. We shared it with the public, and all the public has to do is to read the report that we filed based on our report."
