Israeli Ambassador: Trump Got It 'Exactly Right' on Iran

Israel's ambassador to the United States on Monday said that President Donald Trump got it "exactly right" when he decertified the Iran nuclear deal, adding that "when Israelis and Arabs are on the same page, people should pay attention."

Ron Dermer told MSNBC's "Morning Joe" panel that just the threat of withdrawing from the deal gives Trump enormous leverage to get it fixed.

"The only reason you're having this conversation is because the president said he's prepared to walk away from the deal," Dermer said on MSNBC. "President Trump on Friday established a credible threat for the United States to walk away from the deal. And that has give him enormous leverage.

"I think that the policy that President Trump articulated is exactly right. … We believe that the president took the right course," Dermer said.

Further, Dermer said that Arab states in the region also agree with what the president did, and that in itself is telling.

"What President Trump has done on Friday and why this is so important, is he shifted back U.S. policy to a policy of preventing Iran from ever acquiring or developing nuclear weapons. That's the right policy," Dermer said. "It's also supported by the Arab states in the region. When Israelis and Arabs are on the same page, people should pay attention."

Trump instructed Congress to legislate revisions to the deal signed by President Barack Obama that would, among other things, remove sunset provisions that would allow Iran to commence a nuclear program after the 10 years of the deal expires.

It's the difference between prevention and containment, Dermer said.

"One thing that has been lost in the discussions over the last few days is the United States basically a few years ago when it signed this deal … essentially abandoned a policy of preventing Iran from developing nuclear weapons. It was a policy of containment," Dermer said.

"Iran's not going to agree to anything because they were given the deal of the century, and it allowed them to have nuclear weapons," Dermer said.

"This deal puts them on cruise control to nuclear weapons, toward this cliff," Dermer said. "And everyone saying that Iran is complying to the deal is essentially saying the cruise control is working great. And they're not focused about the cliff.

"In a few years, Iran will be able to walk in to the nuclear club," Dermer said.
