More than six out of 10 Americans say President Donald Trump fired James Comey as FBI director to protect himself, while 27 percent believe he did it for the good of the nation, The Washington Post-ABC poll revealed.

Here are the highlights from the new poll:

  • 56 percent of those surveyed say Trump is trying to interfere with investigations of possible Russian influence in the election, compared to 34 percent who say he is cooperating.
  • 21 percent say they trust what Trump says about possible Russian interference in the election, while 72 percent trust him "just some" or "not at all."
  • 36 percent say they trust what Comey says about Russia and the elections "a great deal" or a "good amount," while 55 percent say they trust him "just some" or "not at all."
  • 28 percent support Trump's decision to withdraw from the Paris climate agreement, while 59 percent oppose it.

"Large majorities of Republicans say Trump fired Comey for the good of the country (71 percent) and that he is cooperating with investigations into Russia's election influence (77 percent)," Scott Clement and Emily Guskin of the Post wrote.

"At the same time, roughly one in five Republicans say Trump fired Comey to protect himself, while about one in six think he is trying to interfere with investigations, criticisms shared by more than three in 10 conservatives.

"Democrats are nearly united in their suspicions of Trump, with 88 percent saying he fired Comey in May to protect himself and 87 percent saying Trump is trying to interfere with investigations of possible Russian influence in the election."

The poll was conducted June 2-4 among a random sample of 527 adults. The margin of error is plus or minus five percentage points.
