An Indiana church and a local police department are working together to offer gift cards for people who surrender their firearms.

Wabash Avenue Presbyterian Church in Crawfordsville, Indiana, will host an April 28 event that will accept semi-automatic rifles, large-capacity magazines, and bump stock devices, according to the Indy Star. The Crawfordsville Police Department will take possession of the weapons and will melt them down at a nearby steel company.

People will receive a $100 gift card from Kroger or County Market for donating a gun and a $25 gift card for donating accessories.

"We grieved and we were shocked once again by the mass killing in Parkland [Florida], and that was only the most recent," church member David Hadley told the Star. "Go back to Sandy Hook and Colorado . . . seeing the kids running out of the school and away from the school was heartbreaking.

"My wife and I were both career-long educators and have been dealing with children and young people all of our working lives, and we thought, what can we do to make our children and our grandchildren and our community safer?

"If we can get two or three or five or 10 of these things out of circulation here, that is a start."

The Parkland shooting massacre left 14 children and three adults dead on Valentine's Day. That event has breathed new life into the gun control movement, with students now joining the effort to curb gun violence through legislation.
