Huckabee: Europe's Immigration Policies Brought Barcelona Attack

Europe's "unfettered immigration policies" has led to another tragedy with the deadly terror attack in Barcelona on Thursday, former Gov. Mike Huckabee said Friday, while defending President Donald Trump's call for an increased vetting process in the United States.

"We have seen it in France and in Belgium, we have seen it in the U.K., we have seen it in Germany, and now we see it in Spain," the former Arkansas official and presidential candidate told Fox News' "Fox and Friends" program. "People have been so critical of President Trump because he wanted to have a vetting process for the United States."

The United States, he continued, has got enough trouble with homegrown terrorism, "like we saw at Charlottesville. But we don't need to import any more of it."

And when it comes to Europe, said Huckabee, it needs to "wake up and realize that when you invite people in who do not share your values, who do not share your future and interests, you just got to say you're not coming in."

Trump has come under criticism after tweeting a debunked reference to Gen. John J. Pershing in response to the Barcelona attack, but Huckabee defended the tweet as coming from an "impulsive person who says things that come to him at the moment."

"I'm just convinced that no matter what Donald Trump says, no matter what he does, the critics are going to line up and pile on," said Huckabee. "If he says something — that if he says 'God bless you,' they will beat him up for using the term 'God.'"

People can either accept Trump's Twitter account as being posts from "the mind of a guy who is being incredibly transparent, maybe sometimes uncomfortably so, or they can just use it as one more way to show their absolute irrational hatred for all things Donald Trump," said Huckabee, whose daughter, Sarah Huckabee Sanders, is the White House press secretary.

Huckabee said he also thinks Trump made a "clear statement" on Saturday concerning the violence in Charlottesville.

"He was incredibly clear, calling out by name the white extremist and anti-semitic groups that are disgusting," said Huckabee. "I don't know what else he can do, because these people are not going to be happy. They don't want to be happy. They want to be angry and hate Donald Trump and they will find a way to do it."

The steps Trump has taken with immigration have already cut in half the number of illegal immigrants coming into the United States, Huckabee said, and "people ought to be standing up and applauding. This is a president who takes American security seriously. Thank God for that."
