It's fear and loathing time for immigration hawks who were left stunned after President Donald Trump's endorsement of a DACA proposal that seemingly leads to amnesty, the Washington Examiner reports.

Outside conservative groups are fuming in the aftermath of Trump's "bill of love" idea that would protect the more than 700,000 "Dreamers" first and then tackle comprehensive immigration reform later, the Examiner reports.

It's supposed to be the other way around, immigration hawks say.

Further, Trump caused more confusion when he appeared to agree with Democrats on a clean bill to protect the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) recipients without funding for a border wall, a point the White House clarified later - the wall is border security.

"Even though the public relations flacks at the White House clarified Trump's statements afterwards, his comments are red meat for the Democrats," Bob Dane, executive director of the Federation for American Immigration Reform, told the Examiner. "I think this represents a certain level of naiveté on the president's behalf."

Trump summoned a bipartisan group of 20 lawmakers to the White House on Tuesday to hammer out an immigration deal ahead of next week's latest stopgap spending deadline.

Trump vowed that DACA will get done and that he would "take the heat" for it.

"If DACA comes before everything else, then this is a sellout just like the Gang of Eight bill and I cannot overestimate the damage to the GOP in the midterm elections if what we heard today is the priority," Dane told the Examiner.

"The border wall, chain migration, and the visa lottery are the heavy lifting of this process," Dale Wilcox, executive director of the Immigration Reform Law Institute, told the Examiner. "They should be addressed in conjunction with any DACA agreement, or they will again be kicked down the road to a time when the problems have become much worse."

"That's complete surrender," conservative radio host Mark Levin said. "I suspect the president will realize that and try to walk some of that back, but that is very bad. And he did it in front of the media. He did it in front of the Democrats. The whole world heard it."
