Mitt Romney leads Rick Santorum 37 percent to 31 percent going into  Tuesday’s Illinois primary, according to a poll of likely GOP primary voters from Fox Chicago News. The poll was conducted Wednesday, after Santorum’s victories in the Alabama and Mississippi primaries Tuesday.

Romney’s 6 percentage point lead is well outside the poll’s 2.2 percentage point margin of error.

Newt Gingrich polled a distant third, with 14 percent support, followed by Ron Paul, with 8 percent. A total of 10 percent of respondents were undecided.

There was little difference in results among male and female respondents, despite the recent public debate about contraception issues. Voters’ biggest concern is the economy and jobs, the survey showed. A total of 60 percent of respondents said those are the most important areas where candidates’ views have to match their own.

A combination of abortion, the right to bear arms, and gay marriage was the second-most important, with 26 percent of respondents citing them.

A total of 47 percent of respondents said they aren’t pleased with the current crop of candidates and would prefer an alternative, while 43 percent said the opposite.
