The marriage history of Rep. Ilhan Omar, D-Minn., has been exposed – and legally corrected, albeit by using campaign funding – but the congresswoman is not speaking publicly about how or why there were alarming discrepancies, according to the Minneapolis Star Tribune.

Documents show Rep. Omar filed federal taxes in 2014 and 2015 with her current husband, Ahmed Hirsi while legally married to but separated from Ahmed Nur Said Elmi – someone who might reportedly be her brother – according to the report.

"Since before she was elected to office, Ilhan has been the subject of conspiracy theories and false accusations about her personal life," Rep. Omar spokesman Jeremy Slevin told the paper in a statement. "Emboldened by a president who openly treats immigrants, refugees, and Muslims as invaders, these attacks often stem from the presumption that Ilhan — like others who share those identities — is somehow illegitimate or not fully American.

"Ilhan has shared more than most public officials ever do about the details of her personal life — even when it is personally painful. Whether by colluding with right-wing outlets to go after Muslim elected officials or hounding family members, legitimate media outlets have a responsibility not to fan the flames of hate. Continuing to do so is not only demeaning to Ilhan, but to her entire family."

An investigation found Rep. Omar improperly used campaign money to legally fix her tax filings, according to the Star Tribune, but the reports Elmi is her brother she married to skirt immigration law could not be confirmed nor rebutted.

Rep. Omar, her current husband, and Elmi declined to comment to the Star-Tribune, which reported social media posts suggest Elmi is now back in Africa.

"It's really strange, right, to prove a negative," she had told the Star Tribune in October before her election to Congress.

"If someone was asking me, do I have a brother by that name, I don't. If someone was asking . . . are there court documents that are false . . . there is no truth to that."

Rep. Omar's relatives could clear the air on Elmi for her, but have declined to do so as well, the Star Tribune reported.
