Rep. Will Hurd, R-Texas, wants Congress to come up with a strategy to counter Russian disinformation campaigns, The Hill is reporting.

Both the House and Senate intelligence committees are investigating Russia's meddling in the presidential election. But Hurd said there needs to be more discussion on how to counter the disinformation, according to The Hill.

"We're not talking enough about disinformation and how we counter disinformation," Hurd said. "That is where a broader conversation needs to be happening here in Congress. Because we do not have a strategy on dealing with disinformation from a nation state actor."

Facebook disclosed in September it sold about $100,000 in political ads to Russian-linked accounts, The Hill reported. The ads were estimated to have reached nearly 146 million people in the U.S.

Some of the ads urged support for Donald Trump and others attacked Hillary Clinton, The Washington Post noted.  Still, other ads, exploited social issues, including gun rights, in an effort to impact how Americans voted, the newspaper said.

Facebook, Twitter and Googles officials told lawmakers in October about outside efforts to use their platforms.

"I think the public hearings of the three social media companies was valuable to really understand how the Russians were trying to disrupt," said Hurd, a member of the House Intelligence Committee.

"I say we have to broaden the conversation. Were they trying to influence the campaign, our elections? Yes. But they were doing it to erode trust in our institutions.

"The question becomes — how do you counter that?"
