Hunter Enters Surprise Guilty Plea to Avoid Tax Trial Months After Gun Conviction

Thursday, 05 September 2024 05:09 PM EDT

Hunter Biden pleaded guilty to federal tax charges Thursday to avoid facing another criminal trial months after the president's son was convicted in a separate gun case.

President Joe Biden's son entered the surprise plea hours after jury selection was supposed to begin in federal court in Los Angeles.

Hunter Biden's tax case sentencing is scheduled for Dec. 16 at 3 p.m., Newsmax reports.

A pre-sentencing report will be prepared ahead of time.

The case brought by the Justice Department accused Hunter Biden of a scheme to avoid paying at least $1.4 million in taxes.

Hunter Biden was already facing the prospect of potential prison time after his conviction in June on three felony gun charges.

It's the latest twist in the long-running legal saga of the president's son. He was supposed to avoid trial in both cases under a plea deal last year with prosecutors that fell apart after the judge raised questions about it.
