Two bills aimed at helping combat human trafficking in trucks were approved Wednesday by the Commerce, Science and Transportation Committee, The Hill reported.

Both now head to the Senate floor for consideration.

The No Human Trafficking on Our Roads Act, introduced by Sen. John Thune, R-S.D., would disqualify individuals from operating a commercial motor vehicle for life if they previously committed a felony involving human trafficking.

Sen. Amy Klobuchar's bill, Combating Human Trafficking in Commercial Vehicles Act, would designate a human trafficking prevention coordinator at the Department of Transportation and increase outreach and education on human trafficking at the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration. It would also create an advisory committee on the issue.

"As our eyes and ears on the road, truckers, and commercial drivers are often the first line of defense against human trafficking," said Sen. Klobuchar, D-Minn. "By providing training to recognize and report trafficking, we can empower them to prevent this heinous crime across the country."

Thune said "the sooner they get to the president's desk, the sooner we can send a strong message to anyone who might consider engaging in this horrendous criminal activity," according to the Hill.
