Conservative radio host Hugh Hewitt is calling for a special counsel to investigate the FBI and Justice Department.

Hewitt's comments came in a column in The Washington Post on Monday.

And they follow a report in the Post that FBI official, Peter Strzok, who had been removed from special counsel Robert Mueller's investigation, had exchanged texts critical of President Donald Trump and in support of Hillary Clinton.

Strzok was also reported to be a key player in the probe into Clinton's use of a private email server.

"This is a blockbuster revelation, carrying the possibility of shattering public confidence in a number of long-held assumptions about the criminal justice system generally and the FBI and the Justice Department specifically," Hewitt said.

"The Justice Department should appoint a special counsel to investigate Strzok's actions as soon as possible."

He maintained "if Strzok's texts reveal deep animus towards Trump or an operational effort to tilt one or more investigations, then all of his actions have to be reviewed to assure the public's confidence in the bureau."

And he said it would be "disastrous" to sweep these activities under the rug. Hewitt also called for publication of all the questionable texts and said the public has a right to know.

"To get to the truth, and restore confidence in federal law enforcement, better a special counsel to conduct the inquiry, bring any necessary charges and make a report — someone without ties to the president or his opponents," Hewitt said.
