Conservative radio host Hugh Hewitt on Wednesday hailed President Donald Trump's firing of the secretary of state as "necessary to national security."

Hewitt wrote in an op-ed for The Washington Post that Rex Tillerson's State Department moved at a "glacial pace" in filling positions, noting that multiple "key jobs remain unfilled, including the undersecretary for arms control and international security affairs and the U.S. representative to the U.N. mission in Geneva … The undersecretary for management is another empty office, even though veterans of the bureaucracy from past Republican presidents remain available.

"Tillerson has also failed to push nominees for crucial ambassador posts," in Germany, South Korea, Turkey and South Africa, "though numerous and very qualified candidates abound," Hewitt wrote.

"The paperwork gridlock of an isolated and uninfluential secretary of state brought the conservative pro-Trumpers and career State Department staff together in agreement that the department was a massive shipwreck."

The radio host goes on to praise Trump's choice to replace Tillerson, CIA Director Mike Pompeo, who he notes was "first in his class at West Point and an editor of the Harvard Law Review," and comes with "key experience in the ways of the Washington swamp" from his time at the law firm Williams & Connolly.

"It was a sudden and somewhat rough change, but necessary to national security," Hewitt wrote.
