Changes to New York City Housing Authority, including public-private partnerships to improve the living situations of residents, will be "coming out soon," according to Housing and Urban Development Secretary Ben Carson.
"We talked about getting some things done within the next few weeks," Dr. Carson told Sunday's "The Cats Roundtable" on 970 AM-N.Y. "I don't want to put it off for months and just kicking the can down the road.
". . . There should be some announcements coming out soon."
Dr. Carson told host John Catsimatidis it is "almost incomprehensible" NYCHA's executives lied about lead test results, suggesting management changes are to come.
"I certainly expect that we're going to put the right emphasis on getting the right people there because what kind of people really lie about doing lead testing knowing the deleterious effects that it has on brain development and on the rest of a persons life?" Carson told Catsimatidis. "It's almost incomprehensible. We want to make sure that those kinds of individuals are not there, based on their records before."
Carson intimated, because "there is more money in the private sector than government," there will be private companies coming in to manage NYCHA – perhaps making a model for the rest of America to follow in the future.
"It's eminently possible – some of the most successful developments in the country have been done through P3's, or public-private partnerships," Carson said. "You create win-win situations, and that really is the key to lasting improvement. . . . They have long term incentive for people to stay involved."
". . . There will be clear responsibility and clear oversight."
