Former Starbucks CEO Howard Schultz said he would rethink a possible 2020 independent run for the White House if the Democrats nominated a centrist candidate, The Washington Post is reporting.
“I would reassess the situation if the numbers change as a result of a centrist Democrat winning the nomination,” he said in an interview posted Thursday.
He said internal polling indicates he would be competitive in a race against President Donald Trump and a liberal Democratic candidate. But a more moderate Democratic nominee, like former Vice President Joe Biden, could complicate his bid for the White House, the Post reported.
Schultz has noted he will spend the next four months exploring whether to enter the campaign. But The Hill noted he already has hired aides and advisers for a potential 2020 run for the White House.
