If the Democratic Party wants to make a political comeback, it needs to get behind whoever the nominee is in 2020 and stop tearing down potential candidates, former Democratic National Committee Chairman Howard Dean told MSNBC's "Morning Joe" on Monday.
"We don't have a perfect candidate. No matter who we have left, right or center in the Democratic Party, they're not going to be perfect and people are going to complain about them. Stop it," Dean said. "We can't beat the Republicans, who are incredibly well organized, unless we all hang together."
Dean said what particularly bothered him is those in his party who "let the perfect be the enemy of the good" and cited attacks against California Sen. Kamala Harris as an example of what made him call some in his party "whiny."
"Whoever we nominate, we have to get behind," Dean emphasized. "We have to stop complaining that they might have taken a contribution from Wall Street, or they want something that's too far left. That is impractical. Stop it. There's a nomination process. Stop complaining and get ready to pull for whoever the nominee is."
Dean stressed that "The most significant thing we can do is turn the page on my generation. We have got to get young people to come out and run, and that is happening" to a certain degree.
He stressed that the process was important as well for the upcoming governor races, as well as the midterm elections.
Dean also said that, in addition to good candidates, the Democratic Party has to come up with a viable message to deliver to the public.
