House Republicans are doing the best they can to avoid a government shutdown while staying true to their budget-cutting principles. They plan to approve a two-week stopgap spending bill next week that would prevent a March 4 government shutdown and would include spending cuts,
Politico reports.
The idea is to cut spending by $4 billion over the next two weeks, which amounts to a pro-rated portion of the $61 billion in spending reductions that the House has approved for the remainder of fiscal year 2011, which ends Sept. 30.
To be sure, the plan is tentative, Republican aides tell Politico, and legislators are still working on the details.
Passage of such a bill would put pressure on Senate Democrats to put up or shut up.
