The House on Tuesday voted to approve a stand-alone defense appropriations bill to increase funding for the U.S. military, a measure likely to fail in the Senate, The Hill reports.

The bill, which would allocate $659.2 billion to the Department of Defense, was approved, 250-166, with 23 Democrats joining Republicans to pass the bill and four Republicans voting no.

Texas Rep. Kay Granger, the chairwoman of the House Appropriations defense subcommittee, said Congress needed to "act responsibly and do its job to quickly get these dollars out the door and where they’re needed as soon as possible."

"All federal dollars are not the same," she added. "We need to provide and prioritize national security after years of neglect in an increasingly dangerous international situation."

The Senate has yet to vote on a defense spending bill as Congress struggles to clinch a long-term spending agreement. The government will run out of money on Feb. 8, but Republicans and Democrats are divided over whether they can agree on a measure without a solution for Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals recipients.

With the vote Tuesday, House Republicans fulfilled a promise to defense hawks and the conservative Freedom Caucus that they would take up the bill in exchange for support on the most recent continuing resolution.
