The House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform have scheduled a hearing on long-term healthcare premium increases and the DEA's oversight in its confidential source program.

The inquiries will take place on Nov. 30.

The federal government in August announced that premiums for nearly all its existing long-term care insurance policies, open to federal workers and its relatives and insured by John Hancock Life & Health Insurance Co., would increase by an average of 83 percent starting Nov. 1.

"This is a kicker. It really is," a 78-year-old widow and retired teacher in Waldwick, New Jersey, who didn't want her name used told Nerdwallet. She faces an increase that will total $1,000 over a three-year period.

The Department of Justice in September recommended big changes to the DEA's Confidential Source Program because of poor management.

"The DEA did not adequately oversee payments to its sources, which exposes the DEA to an unacceptably increased potential for fraud, waste, and abuse, particularly given the frequency with which DEA offices use and pay confidential sources," the DOJ OIG said in a statement.
