The White House on Friday referred the House Intelligence Committee to President Donald Trump's tweets Thursday saying he had no recordings of his Oval Office conservations with former FBI Director James Comey.

"We refer you to President Trump's June 22, 2017, statement regarding this matter," Marc Short, the White House's director of legislative affairs, wrote in a letter to the committee's leadership.

The letter then quotes Trump's tweets:

Committee Vice Chairman Adam Schiff, a California Democrat, said Thursday that Trump's tweets don't "rule out the possibility there are tapes.

"It only says I didn't make them, and I'm not aware of them," he told CNN's Wolf Blitzer. "It doesn't speak for the rest of the White House in terms of whether others in the White House may have made tapes.

"So, I don't think we can accept this as a complete answer," Schiff said.

He also said committee members expected the White House to comply with its demand earlier this month to turn over any possible Comey tapes by Friday.

Trump raised the possibility of any tapes in a May 12 post saying Comey "better hope that there are no 'tapes' of our conversations before he starts leaking to the press!"

The House committee is among three congressional panels investigating Russian meddling in last year's election.
