The head of the hardline conservative House Freedom Caucus says many of his group want to avert a government shutdown this fall, even if there is no money in a short-term funding bill for President Donald Trump's proposed border wall.

In an interview on ABC News' Powerhouse Politics podcast, Rep. Mark Meadows, R-N.C., took a sharply different view than Trump on the shutdown issue.

Meadows' interview starts at the 17:24-minute mark.

"In talking to a number of my members, if there was a vote for a continuing resolution next week that did not include border wall funding, the majority of those members would be supportive of that," Meadows told hosts Jonathan Karl and Rick Klein.

Meadows asserted he prefers a solution where government funding will continue through the rest of 2017, with any possible shutdown showdown over the border wall between the United States and Mexico not coming until December or January — citing the need to keep government open to deal with the devastation from Hurricane Harvey.

"I don't know that anybody's advocating for a government shutdown," Meadows added. "Obviously I'm very aware of the priorities that the president's put forth in terms of the border security and the wall, and I certainly support that."

But, he said, "next week . . . we are encouraging our leadership to go ahead and put a bill on the House floor and let us vote for that."

"Most of the conservatives that I talked to are willing to . . . vote for a continuing resolution that just basically would not have wall funding in it – would continue the current stream of money that keeps the government operational while we work through and negotiate on the appropriations bill," he said.

Meadows also took issue with the Trump administration's support of a "clean" lifting of the debt ceiling – one that is not tied to other conditions or critical legislation.

"A clean debt ceiling is not something that I support," he said. "We've got a fiscal crisis on our hands. We've got out-of-control spending, and yet we continue to raise the debt ceiling over and over again without any thought of how it is going to be paid back."
