House Democrats are demanding to know why the Trump administration is planning "major outrages" of the Obamacare website during the upcoming open enrollment period, The Washington Times reports.

Rep. Elijah Cummings, D-Md., who sits on the House Oversight Committee, noted President Donald Trump already has cut the open enrollment period in half.

Plans call for HealthCare.gov to be shut down for 12 hours of maintenance on five out of six Sundays from Nov. 1 to the middle of December, the Times reported. There is also an overnight outage planned following the first day of enrollment on the website.

Cummings and about 80 House Democrats want Health and Human Service Secretary Tom Price to justify the upcoming maintenance.

"It is unclear why the Trump administration needs so many more outages to maintain the site this year — after the enrollment period was shortened — and why the administration designated the first day of open enrollment season to conduct purportedly regular, non-urgent maintenance," Cummings said in a letter to Price

"Unfortunately, in addition to undermining the ACA, the Trump administration's recent actions may harm many Americans who are seeking to obtain health insurance to protect themselves and their families."

And The Hill noted one official downplayed the impact of the planned maintenance and claimed it will not impact those looking to sign up.

"Maintenance outages are regularly scheduled on HealthCare.gov every year during open enrollment," the official said. "This year is no different. The maintenance schedule was provided in advance this year in order to accommodate requests from certified application assistors."
