Top House Democrats are demanding the inspectors general of three federal agencies investigate President Donald Trump's "zero tolerance" immigration policy, including the forced separation of children from their parents, The Hill is reporting.

The five lawmakers asked the inspectors general from the Department of Health and Human Services, the Department of Homeland Security and the Department of Justice to look into the entire process for planning and implementing the immigration plan, The Hill noted.

Their call for an investigation came in a letter sent on Friday.

Signing the letter were Reps. Elijah Cummings of Maryland, Jerry Nadler of New York, Bennie Thompson of Mississippi, Bobby Scott of Virginia, and Frank Pallone of New Jersey — the top Democrats on the House committees on Oversight and Government Reform, the Judiciary, Homeland Security, Education and the Workforce, and Energy and Commerce, respectively.

"We are writing to request an investigation into the Trump administration's 'zero tolerance' policy – as well as its policy of separating children from their parents at the border – and the partial reversal of these policies through President Trump's executive order on June 20, 2018," they said in the letter.

"We strongly oppose these misguided and destructive policies. In addition, based on the events of the past several months, we have grave concerns about how the Department of Justice, Department of Homeland Security and Department of Health and Human Services considered, prepared for, and executed these policies."

The House members said that "multiple reports" indicate the administration "failed to put in place adequate protocols to reunite children with their parents."

And they also claim to be concerned about reports the "Trump administration may be coercing parents to waive their legal rights and leave the country in order to be reunited with their children."
